A personal note, this building project (the renevation of 32 Byers Street) was started by a group of non-profit and anti-poverty agencies and people in the early 1990's.
By 1996 they were renting out the units which inclue a room with a kitchenett for sleeping and other activities and a seperate bathroom and closet.
By the beginning of 1997 a "crime watch" group had been started that eventually turned into or "birthed" the Tenants Union.

An individual must be homeless at the time they apply for admission to this
"Housing First" dwelling place. There is only one rule prior to admission
and that is that one is clean and sober at the time they sign the
papers and lease for the apartment. So they remember
what it was they signed and can start fresh.

We also have various "house rules" that have been developed over time so that all of us who had some difficulties can leave here peacefully without disturbances "from the paast",
and so that people can live in harmony here. The monthly General Tenant's Meetings and the House Birthday Party put on by the Tenants Union helps to build "community".
